Ah, ok. I thought you were referring to covering the gaping hole with the carpet. Eeeeek!!
I woulda given you one upside the head for that, if I could have reached!

You guys with 4th gens giving advice are misleading the guy, and anybody else for that matter. On 4th gens, it's easier to do the trap door because the lines have disconnects. I had a 91 and tried the trap door method, unfortunately all 4 lines are solid and have no disconnects, and the sending unit is not coming out with them connected. There are only two right ways to do the third gen, drop the tank, or do the trap door, but then you have to cut the lines and flare them so that you can connect the high pressure lines back up the safe way.

Before you start clambering on "what's right", think about what;s "logical". Do you want to spend your time turning a socket and bloodying your knuckles to drop the tank or take 5 minutes to cut a hole straight to the fuel pump? (which can easily be welded and/or concealed). Think about it.

i'm about to replace the fuel pump in my '97 and i believe i'm going with the access hole vs. dropping the rear-end 'cause i have too many other projects going on to spend 5 hours on this when i can do it an hour or less, i'll take pictures as i go and post them later
