Engine running badly

Engine running badly
I have an 89 IROC 350 TPI. For the last week it has gone from bad to worse.
First off it doesn't want to idle correctly, the tach jumps between 500 and 1200 rpm.
When I start the engine it will stall immediately unless I reeve the engine.
It sounds like it's missing. There is a strong smell of gasoline.
I've taken it took a shop a friend recommended and they have replaced a few parts including an injector.
I haven't picked it up yet I'm going to get later today.
They say it runs better but still calls for to much gas.
When I first got the car I got about 13MPG on my last fill up that had dropped to 10.
They think I need to replace the computer.
Does this seem reasonable? Does anyone have any comments or suggestions?
Thanks in advance
Andy

RE: Engine running badly
Ok so I got my car back.
He replaced 1 injector and the O2 sensor.
He says that the O2 sensor within spec but the computer
is still not sending correct signals to the injectors.
I used to work on my own cars before EFI and computers.
So this is all new to me.
If the computer is bad can the engine still run?
Anyway the car runs better with the new injector. He also replaced the plugs.
The car still idles a little rough, but is alot better than before.
How can I be sure what is wrong?

RE: Engine running badly
I had the same prob with my 88 iroc. I have replaced almost every sensor on the thing. It sounds like your mass air flow sensor. they are about worthless. I have replaced mine twice. It might also be your T.P.S. or your I.A.C. Its pretty much a proces of elimination. Good luck

RE: Engine running badly
Can I get a MAF sensor after market or do I have to go to the Dealer?
Where did you get yours?
How much are they?
I don't suppose one from a 305 TBI would work on a 350 TPI?
Thanks

No I am pretty sure that the tbi is totaly different than the tpi. I got my from autozone and they were about $140. Plus you have to take in your old one. I would start by checking the voltage reading on your tps. if you have a manial it will tell you haow to do this. I would start there. I generally start with the cheapest fix to the most expensive.
