pull off the plastic trim piece off of the inside rear and check your relay to see if it is broken. It will be a small black box plugged into some wires at the bottom. my trunk leaks a bit and shorts it out. If it is corroded or ruined you could tie a plastic bag around the new relay or wrap it in tape to keep water out.

If it is the motor instead of the relay you could always loosen the bolts and raise it up so it is easier to latch but I would check the relay first.

and b4 loosening the latch to raise it, you might want to lube up the movable part of the latch itself. I had this issue and it turned out to be caused by corrosion. you can buy greas in a spray can that works great.

If you are slaming it shut, I can say the pull down system is shot. Nothing short of replacing the Parts will make it work.
Parts needed:
1) Nylon guides
2) Dr Gear
3) Electric motor
4) Housing if needed
Parts can be found at TopDown Soultions and their web site has a excellent set of instructions that can be downloaded.

not necessarily. if his pull down was all the way down then he should be ok. the real problems come if it id up and someone slams it. then the slams down on it and smashes everything.
