So you are pulling a a low horse powerhigh economy motor and replacing it with a lower horse power low economy motor? OK well its your car. All you metal should bolt up. You will havethree issues, one is you fuel system second is your ignition system and third is the tramissions TCC.
You can find 89 era 305's pretty cheap is it really worth all that work to fit a POS motor in there that will completely remove any valve you car may have had?

You will have to toss the computer and wire up your own ignition system. You will have to pull the tank (not a easy job) and replace the sending units, new fuel line (you might make one of the olds ones work)
Replacing your 305 would be a one weekend project costing a few hundred bucks. Getting 1976 engine in your 89 is more like a 4 weekend job and to do it right would cost twice thatas much as replacing your engine. The only way it would be worth it is if the 76 was rebuilt to specs other then that of a 1976 350.
