Default Camaro / Firebird 88 steering column compatability

Hello Camaro-ppl's

I am trying to help out a good friend, who has had some bad luck with his US cars the last few weeks. First his G30 Starcraft claimed a new engine, and then just a few days later, the steering column of his 1988 Firebird snapped. (Auto on floor, no airbag, no radio controls). The old column is toast, and have to be replaced. Even though it's not always easy keeping US cars running over here, with crazy taxes, and very scarce parts supply, we found a junkyard who offered two possible donors.

The first option is a pretty beat up, early 80'ies Camaro (which had what seemed to be a Firebird column in it, with color matched Firebird-wheel and column, which is kind of funny). A sure fit, but the column looks pretty worn, ignition lock busted, and wrong color.

The OTHER option, (for which I am going to ask for you guys expertise), is a 98 Camaro with a beautiful column.. good lock with key, complete, right color and everything... BUT, WILL IT FIT in the 88 ??

Both donor cars and "host", has auto on floor, and tilt wheels. The 98 donor has delay wipers, but my friend is hopeful to get it to work.

I really hope that someone wants to help, and is able to clarify if the 98 column will fit.. We are aware that the wheel with airbag has to go, so the question is purely "mechanical compatibility"..

Thanks in advance!

Happy cruising, and friendly greetings from Denmark to everybody!

Kind Rgds,
Kasper
