Default Bad Starter??

Ok, so I'm not the person to go to when you have a car problem cause I really don't know a thing. But....I have an '86 IROC Z28 and the problems have slowly started getting worse right up to "now it wont start"....

So here is my problem. Turning key to position I interior lights come on, radio, all that good stuff. "service engine soon" light is steadily on. key position II to start her up. No grinding, no crunching, no pop out signs saying your screwed and not getting to work today....nothing. Anything and everything that could possibly be the problem please let me know!! Thanks!

1) Check your battery. Is it above 12 volts? Make sure the connections are good and tight.

A dead starter should not throw a check engine light, but does yours usually stay lit until the engine starts and runs?

how do you know the battery is good? cel should be on if the engine is not running, thats normal. check the connections. do you hear a click at all from the starter solenoid? if not, that wire might be bad. if you do hear a loud click but no starter movement, hit the starter with a hammer while someone is turning the key to start it. if it starts, it needs a starter.
