Default another idea...

ok if any of you guys have been reading my posts im sure you've caught on that i am extremely interested in getting a 350, because the 305 just isnt doin it for me. now... what if i can find a l98 motor out of an iroc, put cam and heads in it, could i bolt a t56 6 speed manual up to it? also a buddy of mine can get me a 350 short block out of a 78 trans am for... free. i was contemplating on just takin that and building up with performance mods... i really want a 6 speed in that car as well, however how much torque are those 6 speeds in the fourth gen camaros rated for i believe its called the t56, what do you guys think?

I may be wrong, but I always thought the T-56 was electronically controlled (speedo and such) so you would have to use the ECM from the 4th gen. I am sure they can hold more power than a T-5 in stock form, but you can get a T-5 built or buy one from jegs or something...

the t-56 was also in the corvettes i think. do the math. the t-56 tranny can hold a lot of power. you shouldnt have to worry about it.

How much power are you expecting to make, and what do you plan to use the car for primarily? I'd be very surprised if the T5 or T56 aren't both capable of handling 400HP with no problems. What a lot of people don't realize though is the sixth gear in the T56 is really a "super overdrive" gear, with a .50:1 ratio, so the only real advantagesare in bettergas mileage ortop speed. If you plan to go drag racing, consider this: gears 1-3 in the T5 are 3.75, 2.19, and 1.41:1 while in the T56 they are a taller 2.66, 1.78, and 1.30:1. If it were me, and I mainly wanted a quick street car that I could occasionally take to the strip, I would go with the T5. Unless you want to drop in a set of 4.10s, then you might eventually need that 6th gear.Just my $0.02, worth, adjusted for inflation of course

i thought the t-5s were rated up to 300 ft lbs of tq. thats why there werent 350 5 speeds in the 3rd gens because they made more than 300 ft lbs.

Actually there are two different T5's the One in Fourth Gen's are the T5 World Class, which is slightly more built up than the regular t5 which came in the Third Gens, however neither of these are capable of handling the torque of a V8 without being upgraded internally.
I believe in stock form, at best they are capable of 230 ft lbs of torque.
