Before spending money or time in changing parts, make sure that you can turn the engine by hand. Remove all spark plugs and squirt some WD40 in each spark plug hole. Put transmission in neutral. Use a breaker bar and socket on the bolt holding the front damper, and turn it clockwise. It should turn without too much effort. If it is difficult to turn, or not turn at all, the engine has problems, especially if water comes out the plug holes.

The lights going off indicates that the starter is drawing more current than the battery or the electrical system can provide. Make sure all battery cables connectors are clean an tight, including the ground cables. You just may have a bad starter, you can remove and have it tested at most auto parts shops.
