Default 305 tbi and 454 tbi...how to tell difference?

ok as some may know i have an 89 rs with 305 i was told by the p/o that the tbi was from a 454 and im runnung real rich right now.

if it does have a 454 tbi i seriously doubt any adjustments were made and instead it was just bolted on and called good.

what can i do to find out if its the 454 tbi?
and is there anyway to adjust it to not run so rich that if you stand behind the car the vapors dont burn your eyes and smell of fuel.

and i dont have a dead cyl or weak spark anywhere as i checked when i purchased the car for any problems

sounds like crap to me. i tried swapping one from a 454 u-haul truck to my friends 350 tbi, and it would not bolt up because its a lot larger. unless someone redrilled it all, i dont think thats possible.

however, to correct the rich problem, its probably the pressure regulator on the back of the unit. the rebuild is about $7 and it probably worth it. if that doesnt fix the problem, then one of the injectors may have crap stuck in it. take the air cleaner off, start it, and watch the spray pattern. they should be balanced. if one sprays more than another, thats likely the problem

It's possible they may have just swapped the BB injector pods into the existing body. I believe you might need a spacer between the pod and TB to do it, but it can be done. I would go shopping on ebay and find either a whole different TBI unit, or just the pods designed for your engine's TBI unit. 454 injectors for a 305 is putting out way too much fuel. The p.o. must have believed in the "more is better" falsehood.

Its running rich? Then he put in the 454 injectors, hence why your running rich, getting way to much fuel. That simple really, just get new 305 V8 injectors

im sure its running rich.
when running i smell fuel when i shut it off i smell fuel for like 10 mins
the engine is a slight bit sluggish from idle to WOT
and when its idle the injectors spray an outrageous amount of fuel to the point it pools somewhat on the butterfly valve and runs down the inside of the tb rather than stay atomized because the spray is so wide when the butterfly valve is open the cone spray hits the walls rather than spray into the intake

Ya you have the larger injectors and even the right sized ones will do that a little but not too much. Get the right injectors for your engine and you should be fine afterwords, pull a plug and see if its fouled as well and might want to change your O2 while your at it, just to make sure
