Default 1986 Z28.....clear coat flaking

Just curious.....

I dont have the money right at the moment for a paint job....but on the hood, top and hatch the clear coat is flaking BAD making the car look really really ugly. Does anyone know the best way to sand off the clear coat without totally screwing up the paint? Just trying to make the car look as good as possible until I can get the money to paint it. Thanx.

you could try buffing compound and an electric buffer. but ask someone who knows about that stuff first i think it might work.

How should I get rid of the clear coat? Buff it out like "rockin85" says?

Don't buff it. You will go through the paint before a buffer takes the clear off. Try going to a car wash and use the pressure and catch an edge of the clear with the water. Or a razor blade and lighty glide it along like you are scraping off a decal.

Well, the car wash idea "kinda" worked.....it took the dirt off, but not a bit of the flaking clear coat. Once I got it back home, I took a razor blade and tried scraping it off, which I was able to get most of the flaking clear coat off. Now, I am left with spots where the clear coat was. I have tried buffing and waxing with a couple coats, in hopes of everything blending in......NOT A CHANCE. I damn sure cant afford a $1000 or more paint job, so I am going to see what a cheap *** shop like Maaco can do about repainting the hood and top only.....those are really the only things that look badly.....I know a REAL complete paint job would be best, but with only a dime to my name what options do I have.

the jambs and everything are looking good.....its just the top and hood and slightly on the hatch. But from what I hear, to have Maaco do a decent paint job at a low price, I have to sand, prime and tape myself.....they will only shoot the paint. I dont have the resources to sand, prime or tape. I will have them do it all.....which is why I will probably only have them do the hood and maybe the top. I can deal with a few scratches on the rest of the car, because the paint looks pretty good everywhere else.

Ask at a shop with a good reputation that is not a production shop like mircale maaco earl shchibe one day.... Unless you ahve a heart condition like I do it wont kill you to find out how much.
I have blown paint off with apressure washer before. But the ones we used had more pressure than the car wash ones.
Or flat black it! Ya know how race cars would have a flat black hood to keep the sun from reflecting off it[8D]
