Default is clear coat like varnish?

This is why I am asking. I know that on furniture if you get a good gouge in the varnish/lacquer(sp)/polyurithane all you need to do is sand it slightly and apply a fresh coat and viola, good as new, no more scratch. Since the clear coat is used in the same way, as a protectant for the pain, could it berepaired in the same way? I have a 96 Land Rover with the clear coat peeling, could I just sand it to the paint and add a fresh coat of clear?

Not really. Clear coat has a 'window" of time in which it needs to be applied to the base coat in order to bond properly. If you have clear coat peeling there is a problem between the base and the clear. Plus if you have a metal flake in the base, sanding the base will mess up the flakes and the paint will not match. The correct fix is to sand the clear off, respray the base color and then reclear. You can blend the paint (ie if the hood is peeling, you blend the new base into the fenders and then reclear the front clip). Sorry, it's not a very easy fix

Thanks. I didnt think it would work but I thought I would ask and see what I came up with. Earl sheib will paint it for about 500 bucks. Its not a car that I need to be all pretty and stuff so I can deal with a cruddy paint job till I get another ride.

chances are if the clear is peeling, then it probably wasn't applied properly. one thing about those cheapy paintjobs is that if you have an underlying problem as you do, they are really only going to scuff the surface, so the paint will have something to adhere to, and then shoot over it.

they will feather it in where it is peeling, but if that is an ongoing problem, it will just start to chip again shorty, under the new paint and them you are really going to have bigger problems
