It collects the gas that evaporates in the tank. Just keeps HCs from floating into the atmosphere. It doesn't affect performance in any way.

It does more good then any other part on your car... It traps fumes from your fuel system and only returns them to the motor once it returns to full operating temp."

I'm pretty sure tha canister returns vapors to the tank which then returns to the engine. My '71 had one because it was a Ca. car when new, but not required anywhere else in 1971, so I took the can and return lines out when I bought it.

If it is still connected to the carb on one end you will have to plug up the port it came from.

Some of them connect to the temp controlled vacuum switched on the thermostat housing. It keeps. It from venting raw fumes into the area around your car. It traps the fumes. So when you start your car it does not go boom.

After 34 years I doubt that the charcoal stuff still absorbs. You can delete it, but then you have a line from the gas tank to nowhere.. You also have an empty spot in the fender nose area.

I am a little late to the game but if you can swing it take a look at the Holley avenger. I played with holleys for years on race and street cars. Holley advertise their Avenger as bolt on and go so I gave it a try. It worked great right out of the box. I have never adjusted anything on it. I don't push my 67 very hard but it drives nice and friendly at the low RPMs. I might tweak it someday but I don't think I could get it much better without a Dyno.
