i have the heat riser setup that goes into the intake as well, so i have both options i guess, which way would be the best setup to use? manual or electric, based on your guys experience with either.

Thanks for the input on all this

I've had more reliable results with the electric, plus it looks cleaner without the piping.
If the heat riser one is working, then it's personal preference really.

If you have both I'd go electric.

any of you guys know where i can find a good bracket for the power steering pump? old bracket mounted to the stock manifold. did a quick search on summit and only found $80 dollar and higher brackets, really dont want to spend that much

also with the summit 600cfm carb, what size open air cleaner should i use with this? 9in? 14?

If your refering to what to do after adding headers and losing the mounting point. I have always used a piece of 1/4" pipe cut to fit the gap. As far as air cleaners go, get the 14". I wanna laugh at guys with the silly little air cleaners. They say they can't get anything bigger on there and what not. Most cars are fine with a full size, just pay CLOSE attention to how tall your stud for the air cleaner is. There are way too many cars with dents in the hood from this.

X2 on what Damon said. I used a piston wrist pin from an old snowmobile cut to length along with the correct length bolt. Mine was missing when I bought the car and the pump wouldn't align properly. Now I have a nice shiny part....lol.

I agree on the air cleaner also. When I bought mine it had the Edelbrock triangular filter that the previous owner claimed was the only one that would fit under the hood. It has an Edelbrock Performer intake. I had a 14" Edelbrock 3" high air cleaner from my first Camaro that I wanted to use. I replaced the stud in the carb (both Carter AFB and a Holley) with one cut to the right height. Make sure it's just long enough and test fit several times. It clears pretty easily. I have a Performer RPM intake to put on soon which is quite a bit taller and will have to switch to a cowl induction hood.

If you get a drop base aircleaner it will fit where most flat base wont. That will allow you lots o room, and still plenty of flow.

True, my Edelbrock is a drop base and fits well over either the carter or the holley carb.

hey all, was pulling the quadrajet from the motor today i also noticed while checking my dipstick i smelled alittle gas in the oil, i'm guessing its from the carb being too rich or leaking too much fuel in the engine. i don't know the history on the carb so i decided to go with the Summit racing 600 cfm carb and an Edelbrock air cleaner to avoid problems with the old carb.

i'm going to change the filter and oil with more SAE 30 non-detergent motor oil for break-in also change the plugs with stock a/c delco's and i'm going to recheck my timing.

anything else i should check before i get ready to pop on the new carb when it gets here?

other stuff i'm getting from summit is a vacuum gauge and the SUM-680101 exhaust

When you say "break in" is this a new engine? If so, DO NOT START the engine without using a break in oil. Some type of ZDDP additive is a must.
