Default Engine knocking help

When I start my engine there is this knocking/clanking sound and it will keep going for acouple of minutes at idle but when i rev it past 1200 rpms or so the knocking/clanking sound will stop. After a few minutes has past and im driving the knocking/clanking sound will stop. Does any one know what that means? Thanks.

Where is the sound exactly? Down below? On top?

You can get a long metal bar and try to determine from where it is coming..

put one of the bar ends on the motor where you suspect the sound is coming from and put your ear ON the other end.. push the end of the bar into the front of your ear opening as if to 'close' your ear.. .you'll hear the engine noises through the metal bar .. move the bar around till you figure you are closest, the sound is the loudest..

of course, be careful not the get the bar around the belts/pulleys/fan blades ;-) .. that could get messy..

Sad to say, and you probably know this: KNOCKING / CLANKING is generally not GOOD, and doesn't go away in the long term without some REPAIR work... (if it is internal to the engine)..
