So you don't have battery power going to the coil/distributor?
Can you post a picture so we know what type of ignition we're looking at?

It now sparks but it won't start because the timing is slightly off and it is backfiring out of the carb, and shooting flames.
How do i solve this?
I have a standard distibutor with the coil that sits on top of the distributor cap, and i have a 4 barrel quadrajet.

While someone else is trying to start the engine, turn the distributor counter-clockwise to advance the timing and see if it will start. If that makes it worse, try turning the distributor clockwise. You can do it yourself by turning the distributor a little and trying to start again, but it takes longer. It sounds like you're close, just not quite in the right spot.

me and my friend have tried turning the distributor multiple times both ways, the plugs are in right, just checked them. So now i am going to rebuild the carb see if something is clogged or stuck and clean out the fuel lines.

^ That's what craby was hinting at. The distributor may have been put in at tdc #1, but not on the compression stroke.
It's quite possible that it's out 180 degrees.

How to find tdc #1 cylinder compression stroke, & wiring sequence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ixfD...eature=related
How to install the distributor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdIGZ...eature=related
