My crankshaft pulley has the three bolts around and one center bolt. I removed the three outer bolts but when I try to loosen the middle, it just turns the motor. Do I need a puller or can this be done somehow else?

 

A safer way is to remove the bell housing cover and grab the flywheel or flex plate and use a pry bar, screwdriver, etc and jam it from turning, and then loosen the bolt. Also, a good impact wrench will get it off without spinning the engine. Once the bolt is off, you will still need a puller to get the damper off.

 

a trick that works great for me is to remove a spark plug, then feed a length of small rope through the spark plug hole. make sure to leave the end accessible to pull the rope out. as the engine turns the rope fills the cylinder to stop the turning and due to the rope being soft it wont damage any components.

 

Just open the bottom of the bellhousing, then take a pair of vise grips or a C clamp and clamp it on the flywheel or flexplate. You can now safely turn the crankshaft bolt out. It might turn a little until the vise grip hits the bellhousing, but then it will stop.
