Default 77 Camaro only starts in Neutral

Just bought a 77 camaro and when it wouldn't start I purchased a new battery for it and it started right up after sitting for two years. However, it doesn't even turn over again (as it did prior to new battery). I have been told there is a park sensor fuse above tranny somewhere and that is the problem. It only turns over in neutral. Has anyone had this problem?

It's a 305 with a TH350 automatic.

so if u push or pull the shifter a little while its in park does it start. sure sounds like the linkage or a switch is adjusted a little off.

No it does not. There is absolute silence. Has to be put in neutral just to turn it over.

im not up on the older camaros but i would think u have a switch either in the column or the console that enables the starter.

Ya that's what I have heard. I will check it when I get to to it in a couple of weeks.

Which do you have, column or console shifter?

If you go digging into the console, you should find a neutral safety/reverse switch mounted to the base of the shifter. I'm not totally familiar with your switch, so you probably have more than two wires connected to it (also acts as your reverse lights switch). You need to find the two wires on the switch that are for the starter safety and connect them together to bypass the switch. If the engine then starts like it should, either the switch is bad, or the shifter isn't pushing the switch forward far enough. Just be careful if you leave it hot-wired, because you'll now be able to start the car while in gear.
