The "Slow but Steady" '78 Project Build
I'm using an Edelbrock carb for now Neal, but I'll try to find that story you mentioned anyway as I'm curious. I might end up looking for a 650 DP but for now, just gotta hope and pray those problems don't arise for me. I know some people pay extra for the seats in their car to vibrate so I'll look at this as a "half full" situation as I must've saved money for that option the way I went? It can't be any worse than the vibes from a good stereo system that I've had in prior vehicles and all I ever had to deal with was re-gluing the rearview mirror back on. Appreciate the insight gentlemen, for now it's solids.
I got half of the frame done today, I'm proud to report. Sure wish the pressure washer didn't break last fall so I could've gotten the residual sludge off the frame by the old mounts. As soon as the wheel hits that stuff it makes a huge mess and slows me down big time. Think I'll take some simple green and a brush to the rest of it before goin' back at it tomorrow. I'll post some pics when I finish.
Glad you got the deadener in Damon, gotta feel nice making progress like you are! Did you use Lizardskin then? I'm not covering everything, but I can get Dynamat at cost from one of my friends downstate so I'll be using that. Not ready to do the inside floors or trunk just yet, still have too much to do underneath!!!

I am coating as much as I can. I have a 100 sq of dynamat but didnt use it. I may use it in areas were the vibration is bad. For now I have to get another bucket of LS. That stuff is kind of over priced but it isnt the latex paint everyone makes it out to be. Its much thicker. I have the sound deadner and the ceramic insulation. The total build is pretty thick so I'm starting to wonder if the interior will fit right. We'll see i guess.
Out of curiosity what is cost for dynamat? I would have done the car with it but I feel spraying it on gets into places dynamat couldnt. Plus it encapsulates the metal and prevents water and air from ever getting to the steel.I kind of want to do the bottom too! but at 45# a bucket I am adding a ton of weight to my car.

I found after cleaning numerous car frames that it's always better to use a putty knife to scrape away as much grease, grime, etc. before ever starting any cleaning with solvents, pressure washers, or wire wheels. If I don't scrape it as close to clean as possible the crud just ***** up in the wire wheel or brush, and spreads around. And cleaners just clean residue, so spraying the thick stuff without scraping it first, just makes more mess.
I'm not looking forward to this process on my current Falcon gasser project, but at least it's fairly dry, and not much grease and oil to scrape before cleaning. Mostly just dirt that should come off easier.

I can understand the logic behind using the spray on deadener to fill the cracks and make a seal, makes good sense. I don't think I could get myself to spend the money for LS though. Seems like you could do the same thing by using some caulk and just spreading it around with a brush? I would use Dynamat after trying my best to seal everything with the primer/sealer like you just did. Doing the bottom is probably a good idea also, less worries about fitting stuff back in that way. Doubt it will ever come into play but thinking about having to remove that stuff in 20 years wouldn't be fun either. I suppose it's just a preference issue with which way to go. IMO the noise is just part of the package, it's a Camaro not a Bentley. I'm not building at the same caliber as many others though either. I'd have to check specifics on price Damon, but I can certainly let you know sir.
Vall, I've been using a putty knife to get as much off as possible. The sludge isn't everywhere but there's enough mixed in with old paint and undercoating on the front part where you can't really get with a knife. Not much I can do about it except get as much off as possible before the wheel. I'm on my way out now to hopefully get it done today. Appreciate the tip as always sir.

Tim, here's the link for the article. I have a couple of 700 dps and I'm hoping one has the old bowls with the checkball.

Ya know. I too thought about me or someone else having to get the stuff off years down the road. That is the only thing stopping me. This stuff dries way different than undercoating though. Its gets hard but not stiff if you know what I mean. Or stiff but not hard. Heck I dont know how to put it.
Thanks for the link Neal, very intersting. It kind of seems like the problem is more isolated than widespread? Must be one of those issues that happens if all the circumstances are right, or wrong I guess. I understand where you're coming from wanting to avoid a potential problem adding extra vibration using solid mounts. I must be more of a gambler but my logic is that there's always going to be vibrations, especially with the engines we are all using. It is odd however that this happened to that guy twice in a short amount of time but never before in his 40 yrs of using Holley's. A 650 DP would be ideal for my setup but I'm not sure what kind of carb I'll get to replace the 600 with. There was a comment about drilling a small hole somewhere to correct the problem if it arises, I'm sure you saw that. I don't know enough about carbs to know what he was referring to though. Thanks again for the link.
That's what she said Damon.....

Frame is cleaned up (for the most part) and just about ready to get some paint! Firewall is ready too. As you can see from the pics, I still have to go south from the firewall and get the whole bottom done but that firewall was a PITA with all the various things in the way. Ordered some Fast Etch and PRE painting prep from Eastwood today and just waiting on that stuff and the first 60 degree day to come. I got the spindles in the Molasses and just about have the control arms apart so they can be dipped and ready for paint too. Good day today! Can't wait to see this stuff painted and ready to go back together. Funny pic of what's left of one of those big knotted wire wheels after doing the frame lol!
*QUESTION* Does anyone have pics they could share of their brake dust shields? I need to figure out what their proper shape should be. Not sure if they should have a "step" on them or if that's just from when I dropped the frame with the shields on there and it's a kink I need to get flattened back out. Would be very helpful if anyone can show me what they're supposed to look like! Thanks!

I wish I could have gotten mine that clean. the POR 15 that was on mine wouldnt budge with a wire cup like that. It was my plan too. Looks good though.
The dust shields I dont have a pic of them. If I can find mine you can have them. I cant use them with my brake upgrade. I am pumping 4" of water out of the basement (parts room) right now. I'm pretty sure I'll be at it all day. There isnt a sump pump for sale in 200 sq miles right now with all the flooding we have had.

That's terrible! Hope you get some relief from the rains soon Damon!
