I got a TA rear end girdle tonight. I've cleaned it up, but it still needs some work, I need bolts for tomorrow night. Hopefully I can get the cover on. The goal is to have the car together again this weekend.

 

So what does a TA girdle look like? Is it just the new cover with bearing cap support bolts?

I've been working on the other set of springs and the rear end over the last week. Along with alot of 16 year old daughter celebrating, I went to an Anime Conference with my other daughter, the wife and I had a date night, went to the movies one night, camped out last night... I haven't had a lot of long dedicated stretches of time to get alot of work done on it, but I still am at it. Here is the "finished" rear end, I think that once it is back on the car I'll pull the backing plates off and clean all of that up, I also need to replace a couple of broken studs too so I'll do that then also.

I really hope to get the cars assembled by the end of the weekend, back on all four tires again for each of them.









I did go with the hammered black, but did not like that across the entire rear end, so I painted over the tubes with gloss black. It looks OK I think. Once it is under the car I hope it looks better, if not I'll mask everything off and finish up the gloss black look.

 

I hit mine with Rustoleme from Walmart. i got it in a quart and thinned it about 70/30 with acetone. Then shot it out of my gun. I can't beleive how good it came out. I did my tie rods after smoothing them like I do when I polish my aluminum parts. All the parting lines were removed along with the pitting from the sand casting. They came out looking like I used the old school hand rubbed lacquer. They are so smooth they almost look plastic.

I hung the front of the car with a cherry picker and sprayed it with the stuff. I can touch it up anytime, thats the upside for me.

 

Well, the project car is back together again. I'm not sure that I am even going to put the parts car together. The guy who was fixing it up blasted access holes all over the place to use nuts instead of J clips and just about every part of putting it back together is going to be a two person job... I'm totally spent right now though, so another day could give me the ambition that I need.

I did the Herb Adams mod today, plus the springs are less one leaf, it should be alot better, I suppose that we will see from driving it though.







I did not get any pics of the Herb Adams mod in progress, the camera was by the computer, and I was in attack mode. I did try to get a few though here.











One thing that is for sure too, that brake line job that goes across the rear end is complete crap, I'll be redoing that soon enough.

 

I've heard about that getting done a few times on the Internet. I'm going to have to give that a go next project.

Guess I gotta start writing down things that I've remounted differently over the years, and maybe get recognition too.

He literally wrote the book on second gen handling. My suspension the same way. Soft springs, heavy sway bars and adjustable shocks. Check out the cowl bracing. Hotchkis tries to make people believe they came up with "handle bars" Herb did it in the 70's.

I didn't know if you were cracking a joke or really don't know who he is. Just thought I'd post so everyone knew who we were talking about.

 

lol. No, my point was it doesn't take a rocket surgeon to realize that moving a suspension mount bolt up will lower the body, the same as playing with the other end at the shackles. It's just funny that it has a name. That's something my dad would have done, and maybe did, back in the 40's and 50's when guys started seriously messing with their cars. Unless that's the vintage of this guy, but I doubt he was the re-drill pioneer.
