78' RS Build in MA - "The Moss-maro"
hey maybe you guys can help me. We were working on the Camaro today and figured out that its a pain finding gears bc the shifter bushings are . . . well gone. Pretty much nothing under there. What do i need to know to figure out which shifter bushing kit i need ? Its a 4 speed (opbviously), I believe its a Muncie, and Im pretty sure its a Hurst shifter . . . not 100% certain. Can anyone tell me what to check on to figure out what ill need to fix it ? Is it easier to get a new shifter then tinker with this old one (which im pretty sure also has bent rods). And by any chance does anyone have a stock 4speed Camaro shifter ? Sorry I know exactly nothing about 4 speed transmissions
Well without knowing the brand of the shifter, and whether it's a Muncie or not, it will be tough to determine what bushing kit to get. If it has bent parts, then might as well dump it and find a new one.
But before you buy anything do a search on google for ways to ID what tranny you have. Then you'll know what shifter to order.

A Saginaw will be an iron case with the reverse lever in the tail shaft. A Borg Warner will be a aluminum case with and iron side cover, I think 9 bolts in it. Doesn't matter though. All Hurst sells is whats know as a Pit Pack. They're universal and available in nylon or steel. Nylon helps get the vibration out of the shifter and steel gives a firm more positive feel.
I would try to readjust it. With the shifter in neutral slide under the car, you'll see a set of holes that go through all the shifter leavers and line up with two holes in the shifter body. Slide a 1/4' drill bit in that slot. That locks it in neutral. Then one at a time pull the pin out of each rod, at the shifter end. Then spin the pivot stud until it just slips in the hole. This is assuming you know the tranny is in neutral as well. If you get in there you'll see what I mean.
A Pit Pack will set you back less than $20. I think I gave 16 for the steel ones. Might just want to plan on putting them in before even messing around. I have some good pics of mine assembled out of the car, if you need them just shout.

I had found all this info on the net when I rebuilt mine. I gotta look through my files to find it back. From what I found the Muncies were phased out By '75-'76 and the only option was the ST10. Your car being a '78, it will most likely be a T10 with the aluminum 903 case and the T10 has the 9 bolt steel side cover. Most of the ones I've seen, which is not many, had a 26 spline input and a 32 spline output. I've not yet seen an original Muncie w/the 32 spline output, but, I hear that they made them. They are only rated for 300hp, which seems pretty accurate. It wasn't a month after I rebuilt mine that it was worn back to it's old self, there's a $175 kit wasted.
Ok. The 26 spline input 32 (TH400) out. Is the only way the ST10 came. Older iron case ones are 10 spline input and the smaller (TH350) output. Known as just T10. As far as I know Rockcrushers (M22) were the only other tranny with the 26/32 set up. All other ones were course 10 spline input TH350 output.
As for the shifter i went back through the pictures he posted. That isn't an ITM (stock) shifter.
