Some more progress this afternoon. Pulled the sound deadeners from the floorboards and was fairly happy with what I see. There is very little rust to deal with on these. I also got the fuel tank pulled and the hanger hardware for it. I will be pulling all the hose hangers from under the car in order to pull all the fuel lines and brake lines out from under it next. I was also very happy with how the inside of the fuel tank looked, so I will be able to reuse this tank.

Passenger front floorboar is about as pristine as I could hope.

The floorboard are on the right in this pic had some rust years ago and I ground it out then and fiberglassed the area to keep it from spreading. It appears that this repair did a decent job, but I will pull it all out and weld some sheet metal in for a permanent repair. The other side has some surface rust, but nothing major at all.

Driver front floorboard is not bad either...

I am not sure if I can replace this filter on the fuel pick up or not... If not, I may just run an in line filter that is easily accessible..

hey Ron,

is your gas tank original? with your car being a '70, you should have the vented cap. if so, guard it with your life. you can't get original style 1970 gas tanks with the vented cap neck. everything that they sell is the '71 and up non-vented cap style, which they claim will fit a 1970. it does, but, not only is the filler neck and cap different, it has vent tubes openings that aren't used on the '70.

when we first got the '70 on the road, we started having problems with vapor lock. i figured out the tank was replaced with the '71 and up style and the previous owner plugged all the vents on the tank (uh, duh, vapor lock). this is when i found out that you can't buy the '70 style tank. you can get the gas cap, but it won't work on the later style tanks. 2nd, sending units. if your original sending unit is still good, DON'T REPLACE IT! with the tank issues mentioned above, also the gas gauge never worked. dropping the tank to see what the problem was, i found out that the rheostat was bad. the repop fit like crap. the gasket was too thick, the tube in the tank hit the bottom before it was seated and the notch where it seats on the tank was off. plus the ground wire wasn't long enough for where it attaches to the body on a '70. major mods to get it to work. JUNK! just a little fair warning.

Greg

oh, if you got a pic of the filler neck, i'd love to see it. thanks.

I'll do a pic or couple this afternoon. So far as I know it's original though I don't know about the cap. I CAN tell you that there are three vent lines on it that go through some kind of evap system. This was a California car, though I don't know if they were any different back in that time frame. I plan on getting rid of the vast majority of these lines but I know it needs to be vented somehow. The cap I have seems like a non vented item. I don't recall accurately, but I MAY have replaced it once upon a time with a auto store item. I have had three 1970 cars and I may be confusing this one with one of the other ones.

I have no idea if the sending unit is still good. I can put the multimeter on it later to see what it reads. I will also plan on just running an external filter since this one seems to be non replaceable,

I think an external filter is a great idea anyway. I always wonder what the condition is of a filter sock on a pickup when I can't see it, or easily service it.

Stopped by the machine shop today. They verified that the block will be going .040 over, so I will be ordering the crank/rods/pistons tomorrow. It will end up a 385 with this combination.

Received a few parts today as well. Trans pan. Torque converter, some ARP bolts, and carb feed line...

Passenger side leading edge. Two vent nipples on this side. I have not tried to look inside to see if these are straight through or not..My wife reminded me that we smelled fuel when the tank was fuel years ago. Both rubber lines were dry rotted here and I am hoping that is where it was leaking..

Drivers side leading edge. One nipple on this side. This one and the other two went directly upwards to some kind of evap system that I am guessing I need to keep since I cannot plug all these or I will get a vapor lock situation from vacuum as the tank drains...

oh yea. that's the vented cap. but since it was a Cali car, you have extra evap stuff too. that tank is extremely unique.

Yeah Ca. cars have stuff that the other states didn't get until much later! My '71 came from Ca. and had an air pump on it when I bought it in '73. I tore it off right away, as Or. and the Feds didn't require that stuff.
