Default Any idea what this is and what it does?

Hey guys, took my gauge pod out the other day to deal with some electrical issues and came across something strange. I see this bulb and it has what looks like a solid plastic wire with a brass fitting crimped on the end. I have no idea what it is or what it does. I don't see any place to connect it to and I don't remember if it was connected to anything when I took it out. I don't know if these gauges came with this car because there is a VSS sensor that as I understand came with a car with a manual transmission and mine is automatic and always has been. Thanks.

Fiber optic cable.
It is plugged into a dash illumination bulb.
The F/O cable sends light to anothe rplace for illumination.
Wit it being an '81? from the sig, I have not a clue where the end shown would go.

The open end of the fiber optic goes to your ash tray to illuminate it. Get your head under the dash and look for the opening.
