Default U joint and pinion yoke issues

I’m having problems with my u joints and driveshaft. I have replaced many before but it’s strange on this car because the 8.5 10 bolt pinion yoke has no “pocket” for the u joint caps to sit in. I replaced the rear u joint with a Moog 534 and some new u joint straps and bolts. I torqued them properly and the driveshaft came off the car in 2 blocks! It’s as if the straps don’t clamp the u joints tight enough. Is the pinion yoke just worn out or am I missing something really simple?

The yoke is supposed to have tabs at either end that the u-joint caps fit snugly between. If yours doesn't have the tabs, you need to replace the yoke because either the tabs snapped off or someone "removed" them.

I just realized it looks like there should be retaining clips that slide in the u joint cap and go inside the pinion yoke. Mine looks like this. Thanks

Oh, you have that style of yoke! That makes more sense.

Also, you may need a crossover(?) U-joint meaning driveshaft is a 1310 size and since 8.5 yoke, 1350 size.
Larger 1350 has C-clips inside yoke, picture does not show in thread.
