Default Transmission problems!?!?

So i was driving down the road and i put it in Neutral and coasted down this hill and came to a stop at a stop sign (still in neutral). I clicked it down to drive and started driving down the road and it wont shift out of first, and when i let of it sounds like i went to neutral. But when i put it in first and shift to second it will shift but only if i do it manually. By the way i have a B&M quicksilver ratchet shifter if that helps. Please help if u can

he is talking about the modulator valve on the passenger side ,rear of the transmission.make sure the vacuum line is hooked up.the vacuum line is hooked up at the intake between the carb and distibutor and runs down to the modulator

nothing like cruising down the highway with the tops off and the wind blowing through the car it is a awsome feeling.
