Default Transmission Down Shift?

Hello Gents,
I am new member to the Camero scene, already in love with it though. You guys have some beautiful cars! Here is my scenerio, I recently bought an 81 Z 28, w/ 350, TH350, 2.73 rear gears (i think) from a friend that let it sit in the garage for the last 5 years. I am by no means the best mechanic but I have common sence and enough knowledge to work through systems. I got the car running pretty well but have a few problems that I could use some help with.
First:
I have a holly street avenger with an electric choke sitting in a box that I would like to install but there is a vacuum line in the way. This vacuum line goes to the transmission. My understanding is that this line is used to tell the transmission when to shift. Am i correct withthe understanding of this vacuum line? Also this line is installed directly into the intake manafold, can i move that line to one of the outputs from the carb? If i did thatthe street avenger carb would fit perfectly.

Second:
Under full throttle the transmission does not down shift. NowI know that on the gas pedal there is a switch that gets pushed in and it isadjusted correctly how ever it is not hooked up. there is a single orange wire that comes offit into the engine compartment and itlooks like it touched the header orsomething because it is melted. My question iswhere should this wire connect? Looking around there is 3 wires that go to the transmission. What are these wires? And what are their purposes? should this orange wire be connected to one of them? I noticed a green wire that looks like it goes towards the transmission that is disconnected but i didn't hook it up because i was not sure it was the corrrectwire.Ittoo looks melted whichleeds me to believethis is the home for my lost orange wire.

I hope that this all makes sence and that someone here can shine some light on this subject.

Thanks for the help,

Joe Cummings

p.s. i will get pics up soon.

your vacuum modulator could be bad or misadjusted

you can cap off that fitting coming out of the manifold, and tie it into another vacuum line. what the modulator does is uses engine vacuum to help the shift. so you could prolly use the brake booster line. or there might be a port off the bottom of the carb you can use like on the edelbrock carbs.

The other thing could be your detent cabel (kick down) check the adjustment. you pop up a clip on the cabel and its hooked to the carb linkage. when that clip is poped up. pull the carb linkage to open throttle and push the clip back down. and let off the carb linakge and try that.

i had a 79 and unless 81 has had a computer upgrade. which im not sure of. there shouldnt be any wires running to the tranny. it should just be a basic turbo 350 trans. but if its hot roded you may have a lock up converter and all sorts of tranny up grades of the sort.

not sure what color the wire is but sending unit for the water temperture gage is there on the head and if that wire comes off it could land on the header.maybe an air conditioner wire.i cant think of any other wire that comes that close to the headers.i dont know of any 350 turbos that have wires going them.you may find this wire on a diagram at www.nastyz28.com .you can probably hook that vacuum line up where ever you want to as long as it has constant vacuum
