Hello I am new here but hoping some of you guys can help me. I have a 1977 Camaro in the works and I have the engine from a 1992 Firebird thats going in. its a tpi motor 305. going from fuel injected to carb. Was told that I would need some sort of special intake with angled bolt holes or something like that. Also any other input/ advice on doing this conversion would be great!

 

92 is a different style head motor. i moved your thread to the 2nd gen section. the guys here should be able to help.

 

If your going to go through the trouble to change motors scrap the 305 and do a 350. 45 cubic inches makes a big difference. It cost less to do a 350 and it will be more fun in the long run. Best choice would be a late vortec truck motor 1996-2001, you would need a vortec intake and a 4 pin HEI and a electric fuel pump set up for a carb. $45 get you a nice fuel pump (no privision for a manual pump on these blocks) form auto zone. The roller cam motor stock makes around 330 hp and a lot of torque which is what you feel when you step on the gas. A nice 600 cfm carb and your set.

 

If he's planning on changing to a carb and aftermarket intake, then that era 350 will need more than just the carb and intake. Those years used the Optispark crank fired ignition, and he will need to control that with a computer, or change to a cam and earlier style distributor to eliminate the Optispark.

 

i didnt think they used the opti in the truck. my 97 1 ton is tbi with reg coil topped dizzy

 

My 77 currently has no motor. the 305 was given to me for free, pulled from a wrecked car. I was wondering about the intake I needed I read somewhere it is possible to use an older intake but the bolt holes have to be drilled out bigger or something. is this possible? Am I better off just paying the extra cash for the vortec intake? whats the difference? thanks in advance!

 

the angle of the bolts are different. would be best to use the newer style intake. 87 up i believe is the change.

 

Optispark is an LT1 only thing. Other V8's of the same era have a conventional distributor. The difference between the intakes is the center holes on the newer style (center bolt valve cover engines) are straight up and down. You can use an older style intake on your 92 engine, but you need to drill out those holes to alter the angle. But, if you don't have an intake yet, you might as well get the right kind. And that 92 isn't a Vortec, those are truck engines.
