Default Temp Guage

I am not getting a reading on my temperature guage. I replaced the sensor that screws into the block and that didnt do anything. So i decided to replace the guage and then I realized there is no wires going to the guage. Is this right or am I missing a wire? What should I do?

Well what was running to it and connected to bolts on the back of the guage was that plastic with metal in it. I am not sure what its called though I forgot. Its like a sheet with metal strands that run through it. I knew what it was but it has slipped my mind? Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do?
