Selecting heads
Yes they are old tech. Yes you can get better, but most will not be that much betteer, but they'll cost a lot more. If I already had the double hump heads I'd be tickled to death, and wouldn't change them.
Vortec heads are an inexpensive change, with marginally better flow, and you'll have to change your intake also to use them. Not worth the change from your present heads in my opinion.

Do the heads need work though. Around here a valve job, set of springs, decking, guides, and assembly cost way more than heads and an intake. If they are good then hell ya id use them. Just sayin I paid over 700 to have my heads decked and new guides installed.
Ouch! Around here I've paid less than that for all new valves, guides, and surfacing! I had a pair of SBC 1.94" heads done recently that needed several valves replaced, a std. 3 angle valve job, new guides, and .005" surfacing, and it ran under $300. Springs were OK, just tested and reused.
I did have valves replaced and a chamber touched up. They were'nt assembled though. I didn't have a cam picked out at the time. Hyperutectic pistons and 150 shot.= The day the Nova retired. I did get about five nitrous passes before it spit pistons out the exhaust.
Gotta love that nitrous!
I knew what was gonna happen. Was positive but I was hell bent on 9's. I had been stuck in the 10.5-10.8 for almost 2 seasons. My forged stuff was at home with a split main cap. So I built this 355 on the cheap and used those heads and 13:1 New motor still 10.50's. So I put the screws to it. Went 10 flat. Then took another tenth out of the delay. It went 9.97 @ 135. Trailed home and went to my local track raced all day and afterwards tried showing off my new trick. Poof I made my pistons disappear. I could here it in the burnout box. Thought it was a lifter ticking.
I kinda fell into a great deal. Heads are all done and a 4 bolt main 350 block for $200 bucks.
Actually a buddy of mine is buying it for me from a friend who owes him a favor and is passing it along as a favor to me. Guess I will have to wire his barn now. Sounds like a good deal to me. That also will come built if I buy the parts. I'm gonna do that too.
