New stall and gears?

New stall and gears?
Hello. I haven't posted much but I do come to look around every once in a while. Anyways I have a question for you guys. I have a 1980 Z28. I recently pulled the original 350 out for a built 383. The car is a street/strip car that currently runs 8.30's in the 1/8 at around 83-84 mph. While building the engine, my goal was to get the car down into the high 7's. I would still like to do that somehow. My question is would new gears and a new stall do this and would it make the car less street friendly. Right now it has factory 3.42 gears and a converter that stall probably somewhere around 2200. I was thinking maybe 4.10's and a 3000-3200 stall would do the trick, but I don't want to loose too much streetability. It's not a daily driver so I can definitely live with a little change. My engine is a 383 with afr 195 heads, RPM air gap intake, q-jet carb, hyd. roller cam (.502/.510 lift and 228/234 @.050 on a 108 LSA), around 9.5 to 1 comp. Trans is a turbo 350. Also 28" tall tire. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks a lot.

RE: New stall and gears?
More than likely, yes. But first...what rpm is the engine at when you hit the 1/8 mile mark? What is the max rpm capabilities of the engine? Do you ever plan on racing it on a 1/4 mile track?
Lower gears won't make it less street friendly. But it will make it less friendly to your gas tank (and wallet) if you do a bit of highway cruising. Going with a high stall will make it a little less friendly as far as "driving comfort" is concerned.

RE: New stall and gears?
Honestly I can't remember the RPM through the traps, but in the 1/8, I only go through the 1-2 shift, no third. I shift at 5500. The Air Gap makes it's power from idle to 6000 so i never really go above that. I've ran quarter before, but don't run it very often. As for highway driving, I don't think I've ever taken it out on the highway and as of now, don't have any plans to. I'm really not concerned with gas mileage. I know its going to be expensive and that's just part of it. Thanks.
