Oh I agree completely. It's still an early camaro, so it will be a badass car no matter what type it is.

And no, you can't tell directly what it is from the vin, but it does give you some clue as to what it could or could not have been. (ie. if it had a 6 cyl. it wont be a z28 whereas if it had a factory 396 it would have to be a z28). If you had the build sheet, which on these cars was glued on top of the gas tank, you could tell exactly what it is by the option codes, as there was an rs, ss, and z28 option code for these cars.

396 Camaros were always SS Camaros, not Z28 Camaros.

Hope you're addressing the rust before you install a new windshield! That's a common area for 2nd gens to rust, even if they were always garaged. Just washing the car will allow water to sit and rust to start.
Mine had just signs of rust pits there, although nothing that was holes or rusted through. I wire brushed it, coated the area with POR15, and then gave it a coat of butyl rubber before they installed the new windshield. Didn't want anything to grow later after paint!

I'm sure you're aware that primer is porous, and will allow moisture to get through. It will rust right through the primer if it's not painted in a short time.

There's actually two brackets per side, and these brackets are sandwiched between the lower valance and the fender on the outter bracket, and the lower valance and the header panel on the inner bracket.
Hope you've got those brackets somewhere, because they're not cheap! Cost me around $35 per bracket when I replaced mine! $140!!!! There's also a support bracket that's needed for around $80 a pair. Luckily mine was repairable.
Here's pic of mine when it cam back from the paint shop. You can see the two brakets on my SS full bumper, but the RS uses two brackets also, but I think slightly different. The RS uses the litttle filler plates too, and they're the same for RS or std. Those are more money on top of the brackets! About $60
National PArts Depot has all these items in their online catalog.
