Thanks

Oh the trunk lid

It went well. Was kind of windy outside so there a couple blotchy spots. It's fine for now. I'm basically going for stop the rust from spreading instead of looks for now.

Any info on the ignition? I got under there yesterday, and it's all so confusing to me.

Slowly but surely.

I started stripping the driver side door today. I'll finish sanding and priming it tomorrow *hopefully*, and get some pics up.

Maybe someone can help with my problem.

I can't start my car from inside. I can turn the switch(refer to post #14), and my dash lights will come on, but the car won't attempt to start. No clicking or anything.

I can start the car from under the hood by touching the naked spots on the starter wires together if the ignition is pushed forward, but this is the only way to start it for now.

I'm clueless when it comes to wiring this thing. Any info anyone can give me would be great. Maybe a list of issues that cause this problem, and a way to fix each one

Sounds like a broken wire from the ignition switch, or a switch contact problem. I think a Chilton, or Motors manual will tell you which color wire is the start wire. Then you can put a test light on that wire and turn the key to start position and see if you have any voltage.
As a temp you could install a simple pushbutton under the dash and that would work until you figure it out. Just hook one 12v. hot lead from your fuse block to the switch, then run the other side out and hook it to the starter terminal. Then you simply turn the key to on and reach over and push the button to start it.
I've had a few old jalopies in my past that had bad ignition switches and I couldn't afford a new one, so I did this fix as a temp thing. It works if the starter can be jumped as you're doing now.

I still haven't figured out why my car won't start from the inside. Fusible link? Is this located in the part of the harness that's wrapped in tape?

I have a few pictures of somethings I'd like someone to tell me whats whats.

First pic:
Whats this for Connected to the fuse block to another connector and to that cylinder looking box at the bottom left of the pic. What's supposed to hook to this?

Second pic:
What's this for? 4 Wires running to it. 1 solid purple, 1 purple/white in one connector, and 1 solid green, 1 pink/white in another connector.

Third pic:
Ignition wires. Wondering if someone can tell me which is which, and what they go to.

Fourth pic:
Thinking this was the problem, I replace this starter switch. Can someone tell me where these wires run to?

Fifth pic:
What are these? 2 light blue things, 1 is cylinder shaped, the other square.

If you need more info let me know. I'll try my best to help you help me.

i love ur car! reminds me of mine lol, i just got her a few months ago for $1000, she has rust in the quaters and needs some work, but it is in good enough shape to be my daily driver while i fix it up, it has a swapped out 350 for the old 305, but it sat for 8 years and alot of the gaskets are half rotted, so im putting oil in her every week or two until i get the time and money together (just laid off work) but congrats man, i hope you love your 78 as much as i love mine

1-Not sure what that is, as the picture isn't clear enough. I can tell you it isn't factory, as factory didn't use those aux. terminals, or that type of connector. Appears to be some sort of flasher or relay.
2-That's your neutral safety switch. It cuts the ignition switch out when your car is not in park or neutral, so it wont start in gear.
3-Nope, but a Chilton manual should tell a wire color code.
4-Same as #3
5-Both flashers. One for signals, and one for 4 way emergency flashers.

Ok thx for the help BB427. Gonna see if my nss is shot tomorrow. Hopefully thats what wrong with the car. If so, I can begin, hopefully, work on the floors, and trunk. To keep from choking on the exhaust.

I keep forgetting to post pics of my progress.. Which hasn't changed except for the door. Looks like a primered door though. Very.. gray.

-Edit

Also, forgot to mention I found a nice 69 camaro. No engine trans, interior.. well nothing. But the frame, and body is great. Hopefully, if I can get a nice price from the guy, I'll be putting everything from mine into the 69 in this thread.

Turns out my ignition problem was my neutral safety switch. Should have figured it out when BB427 told me that 2 pages ago. Thanks for the help.

Hopefully new steering column installation within a few days.

Carb rebuilt /w pics hopefully coming soon.

Replacing floors and trunk with fresh sheet metal /w pics hopefully coming soon.

Pretty sure no one wants to see me change the tires.

By coming soon. I mean in about 2 weeks.. If nothing comes up.

Not getting the 69. Guy won't let go for anything I'm willing to pay.

Isn't troubleshooting fun!? Well, the end result is fun, but the rest is a pain. Good job!
