I've bought a 79 camaro with a 6.0 swap and a muncie 4 speed. The 4.10 ring gear and pinion are cooked and I want to know if swapping for a lower gear ratio is better than just replacing the 4.10 ring and pinion.

 

It depends on what you are going to do with the car.,And if you are going with a 4 series gears and the posi is alright.

 

The posi is good. Im just trying to figure out whats a good combination for the motor size. It will end up being a weekend car.

 

Well 4:10's are already pretty low with a 4 speed,4:56s would have your engine screaming on the highway so unless it's just around town and the drag strip I'd stay with the 4:10s.
That 6.0 should have plenty of punch without going lower on the gears and if it's a 10 bolt you already have a less than bulletproof rear end,lower gears would make it that much more likely you'll break it.

 

Its not a mater of motor size it would be a function your torque ban and what you want out of the car. is the 6.0 is stock it has a very long torque ban and it is less of a factor. You say a "weekend car" but even that description leave a ton of variables. So a weekend driver in NY city Vs a weekend car in Montana will have very different ideas of what the car should do. I know a lot of people who swapped out 4:10 for 3:55 or 3:23 to make the car more drivable. But for most of those guys they end up on the highway to drive to shows. IMO the only reason for 4:10 is 1/4 mile racing and 4:56 for 1/8 mile. I you want to hit 145 MPH you may want 2:73's.

Just a FYI Before GM worried about gas mileage SS camaros came with 3:55 standard
