Default My 74' Camaro Needs a Possi

Soo i have owned this 1974' Camaro for about 2 years now, i bought it (stole it really) for 4k. Just as you see it and i really paid for the motor with a fresh built 350 motor with aftermarket aluminum heads, edelbrok intake/ carb definately has a cam in it its a loud thumper with hooker headers straight piped to two no name mufflers with the tips cut off lol. Everything was really fresh when i bought it and was told had 4k miles on a fresh motor and tranny rebuild. but it was like they built the motor but couldnt afford the new alternator, starter, distributor and wiring which i have since replaced and smoothed out alot of electrical issues. This car has had it pass quarter panel wrecked and patched as well as it had it roof cut and patched where a sunroof was once upon a time. And has been painted over several times, i evan found red under the crudely painted matte flat gun grey the car is now. Obviously a z28 clone and was originally rootbeer brown. Has a little rust only in the trunk and the floors have been replaced but started to surface rust from PO not caring. Frame and underside straight as am arrow and the kid evan had the brakes done before i bought the car with fresh rotors in the front and new master cyl. The interior is gone pretty much but it has a b and m shifter somebody istalled nicely and the shift kit works great. It also has a high stall converter you can see is new and b and m chrome tranny pan. Shifts great. No guages work except for my little sunpro temp and oil gauge that doesnt work and its also a single leg burnout non possi. Its extremely reliable now after replacing almost everything related to the original ignition. And its definately been rebuilt before my purchasing of this car. I need a new rear gear though. This car is damn fast but a possi would just give it every bit of potential. What are my low budget options here for making that happen? Thanks

The first we need to know what is in it now, 10 bolt factory rear probably?
Are you happy with the gear ratio or is that to be changed too?
There are a lot of options to change the rear to a posi from mild to wild.
Since it is an automatic if it's a stock 10 bolt it might hold up for quite a while with just a posi carrier added but they aren't near as strong as a 12 bolt or a 9" Ford so you take your chances if you are going to be pounding on it a lot.
That said you can pick up a posi unit for a few hundred bucks and maybe a bill or two to have it installed by a pro (highly recommended).Make sure you know what the spline count is on your axles, most likely 28. https://www.jegs.com/c/Transmission-...29807&sbv=true

Well put Y2K. Add to that, being an original factory A/C car it probably has a 2.73 to 3.08 rear gear. With those tall tires a 3.55 or 3.73 gear wouldn't hurt.

Smog exempt in Cali too! 1976 and up have to be smog checked.

Thanks for the replies you guys, Y2K i looked at the rear end its a 10 bolt and somebody has been in there most likely because it does have a chrome cover. Seems stock although, because its still rear drums and original proportioning valve. Its definately a one legger i'll tell you that. Im actually pretty satisfied with it for what it is. Still takes off like a bat out of hell and doesnt scream crusing at 75 at the freeway (until you start pushing over 100 of corse. I just really think with all the torque and power of my drivetrain it deserves posi traction. I want to still be able to cruise this baby but i always go and romp on her a little she loves it (: haha. Mabey i should start looking for a ford nine inch i hear they can be bullet proof if built right. What gears do you think i would like? I wana be able to cruise but still mash around

For gears I'd agree with this post,3:73s would give a real seat of the pants difference if you have 2:73s. As for a 9" I wouldn't spend the money on that at this point given your goals. Before you go looking at gears though find out what's in there now.

Does the 1974 Camaro still need a possi? Wouldn't that be a large gathering of Camaros that would ride outside of town to hunt down an evil Mustang?

I have a 1979 Z-28 RS with a Supercharged 500 HP small block with a Super T-10 4 speed . I run a 8.5 10 bolt with a Moroso "Brute Strength" posi. and 3:42 Chevrolet gears with no problems .The gears give a good compromise in acceleration and cruise-ability..

Are you running c clip eliminators?
