You don't have to close it all the way to get it expanded enough to do this. Get it down about halfway, then install the rods and open it up. It's enough to get them off easily if you adjust the threaded rods correctly.

 

Well i wasn't sure how i was going to take the springs off, but i was going to put them back on this way, and figured i could probably remove them this way too.

 

Looks like it will work, but I'd feel more comfortable if a nut was holding those turnbuckles on! I'd hate to have my hand in there turning them if one slipped off the top while I was twisting it!

 

I like that, I saved it, and the nut is probably best.

 

This little cut and paste from another forum shows how I removed mine.


So I had done some searches and saw how some had removed their hood springs. I tried wedging a few things between the coils, prying with different things, stretching with others and then I started thinking. How can I keep the spring stretched to it's full extension? Then it came to me. Wrenches! Here's what I did. With the hood off and the hinge still mounted to fender I forced it down to stretch the spring.

Then I slipped a cheap old combo wrench down through the spring and slipped the box end over the hook on the end of the spring.

Then I slipped the open end of another wrench into the spring interlocking it with the open end of the first wrench and then placed the box end of the second wrench over the hook on the other end of the spring

All I had to do was raise the hinge and the pressure of the spring was now on the wrenches. It came right off. And the springs will be ready to go back on if I should decide to go back to original.

I've looked at several Hd's now and haven't found one yet. The last one searched for one with that p/n and turned up nothing.

 

I got my "special fiberglass hood springs" at ACE hardware. They were hiding them in the same drawer with all the other "regular" springs.

 

LOL, probably at a price that made you feel pretty special too. I can't believe what the after market places get for a cheap spring. I think Summit gets like 35.00 for a set. Nope 37.95, just checked. Rip-OFF!
