Default Tranny Stuff

I was under the impression you had a 4 spd already, not looking to swap a from auto to 4 spd. My bad.
Check out Nasty Z28. I got all my trans parts from various folks over there.

I'm sure you're aware it takes a whole lot more than a tranny to swap from a auto to a 4 spd manual! You'll need a tranny, bellhousing, linkage, clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, pedal assembly, Z bar, throwout bearing and arm, adjustment rod, and relocate crossmember. I think that's everything??? Plan on around $1,000-$1,200 for a good 4 spd, unless you get lucky, then maybe about that much more for the rest if you buy some of it used and get lucky again!
A really nicely built competition TH350 or TH400 will cost under $1,000 and it's a bolt in.
If you go manual shift with a B&M shifter you can run through the gears just like it was a stick, but without the clutch.

Swapping to a 4 spd isn't a walk in the park. I should have said that earlier, I looked for 2+ months before I even talked to anyone about buying anything.
I have accumulated everything for around $500, but it took lots of patience and searching.
I haven't begun putting it in yet, that (im sure that will be an experience), but I'll post a pic of every step.
1971BB427 is right, you'd get more bang for your buck (and a lot less headache) with a well built auto. Me, I'm just hard headed
Good luck, if i see anything interesting in my searching, I'll send it your way.

I am really hard headed. plus like i said i am in it for the long haul no matter what. i may get a temp tranny to hold me over but i will have a manuall put in it in due time no matter the cost. i am already rolling a b&m for my auto. but i just love driving a stick. i feel like i have more control over the vehicle anyway...

Im catchin' what ur throwin'. But if ur doin this on a budget, u gotta search, and search, and search some more.
I got lucky, and found an M-20 that didn't break the bank, I'm still collecting parts to put it all together...but it's just little stuff now.
Plus I don't know if my motor is bracketed for that trans (ok I'll make one if not), but dang it's an undertaking.
I can't even guess what putting it al together is going to entail(well, I can kind of guess, I just haven't done this in 20 yrs), but it's going to b interesting...

Most likely a TH350, but what do you need to know? The speedo gear will depend on what rear gears you have.

Yep! A 305 has a stock bore of 3.736". There is no way you can bore it to 4 inches. You can bore it .030" over and put a 400 (3.750") crank in it. You'll get 334 cubic inch by doing that. That might make the same if not a tad more torque then a 350 because of the longer stroke crank. The 350 will probably make more horsepower though.

The thing is, the cost of doing that will be the same if not more then doing the samething to a 350 and making a 383. 383's make a lot of torque.
