Default having problems with HURST shifter

My mech installed new HURST vmatic 2 shifter on my car. from park it goes into reverse and than all good, but once in gear, in straight mode from "d" bring shifter back to "n" and it stays in gear. bring it to "R" it goes "neutral" .
so every time i'm in drive and want to go reverse, i need to bring it to "park" and than do "R"
any ideas?

Your mechanic installed the shifter, did he test it? And did you pay him to install it....correctly? Have you tried asking him? Maybe he didn't do something right, or didn't tighten the linkage arm, etc. Is the shifter you got made for your trans (3 speed I presume)? If yours is made strictly for an overdrive trans, your detents will be different. Or, is your shifter made to be used on either trans, and possibly not set up for the right one?

will check the cable. I really don't want to go back to the mechanic. To best of my knowledge the shifter is for my car. it replaced the older one which was same.

Sounds like play in one of the attachment points. When you go to park and then back you're basically taking up the slack of a loose point. Check the attachment points at the shifter, and the tranny.

Why not? If you paid him to do a job and he didn't do it correctly, take it back and have him make it right.

The machanic should have made sure it was the right shifter before or during the installation. Like someone already said, he should have made sure it was working correctly before he took your money and gave your car back to you.

Just my $.02.
