Default Fusible Link information needed for 1980 Z-28

Hello Everyone,

I have a 1980 Camaro Z-28 that is very dear to my heart. I bought this car brand new from Lexington Chevrolet in Clifton, NJ with my Dad when I was still in college. I lost him about 1-1/2 years later, and I have managed to keep the car running and looking great, partly due to the fact that I only drive it on special occasions. I do not want to get into the stupidity of Chevrolet's engineers or that I found out 30 years after I bought the car, that the body was hit / damaged at the factory or during the delivery process. I realize with the "Quality Control" that GM was building into all their vehicles at the time, this car is a miracle to have survived!! In spite of my negativity toward Chevrolet, the car means a lot to me, and I want to keep it so that I can pass it along to my son.

My issue today revolves around the Starter Motor circuit and specifically the 3 wires and 2 fusible links that come out of a short 7" metal tube with is bolted to the engine block at the lower right. The wires run to the Starter Motor. After 40 years of heat in that metal tube, the wires have become extremely corroded and brittle. I need to replace the three wires or a section of that branch of the wire harness but need to determine the values of those fusible links. Can anyone tell me with certainty what those values should be? Can anyone tell me what colors those wires are supposed to be? I believe that they are either 14 gauge or 16 gauge thickness, but I am not positive. Is there a source where I can purchase that section of the wire harness and just splice and solder it in before it reaches that metal tube? I really want to do this once, and do it right, and not have the car short and burn up on me down the road.

Thank you in advance for listening to me ragging on Chevrolet! In spite of the Manufacturer, I am a devout Corvette and Camaro guy!

Sincerely,
Bob

Did you ever resolve your fusible link issue? I am replacing one on my 78 Camaro. It is a 14 ga. wire running to starter from alternator, and I'm trying to confirm what size fusible link to replace the bad one with. I have read one article that says the fusible link should be two gauges smaller than the wire protected. Can anyone confirm this before I buy and put a new one on?

Thanks!
Mike
