Yes! You'd definitely want to start an engine like that on a hoist, or at least additionally supported by a hoist. Starting any engine on a working engine stand would cause it to flip over the first hit of the throttle if it didn't have extra support above.

You've ran an engine while hanging on a hoist chain? Wheeee!
I'd be leery about starting that monster on anything other than being bolted to a stationary stand.

ok i will inquire about some kind of warranty even for like 30 days. will that be too much for the street even though its supercharged? and is it true that supercharging requires alot of tuning?

Yeah, that's my neighbor for you. He's been an engine builder for 40+ years now and I was a little leery about it too the first time. He's done it about three times now to test an engine before putting it back in a big boat. He has to call a guy with a crane on the back of a truck to drop them in so he has to test it before it goes in and goes through that effort. It doesn't do much, just hangs there and shakes a little even when revved. Nothing violent or scary. I kind of had this image of it vibrating and swaying a lot on the chain but they don't do much of anything to be honest. Just kind of vibrates and you can even hold them steady with a single hand and little effort if you really wanted to. It's not like it's swaying out of control or anything like a wrecking ball with v-belts that go after fingers, ha ha.

You could probably do it with a sturdy 4 - 5 point engine cradle. Hell, I can't even spin my sbc's around on my engine stand without them going kinda wonky sometimes.

Yeah! Try turning even a short block for a BBC on an engine stand! I had some scarey moments when I rebuilt mine on the stand! It definitely tests the strength of a engine stand until I finally decided to beef it up a little with more bracing!

Jason,
I would never buy any engine off Ebay from a private party, unless it was close enough to you to go listen to it. What can you do once it's at your door if there's a problem?

well that blown 468 isn't even running so i couldn't hear that either..would the 600hp be too much on the street?

and i would def need a tranny rated at like 700hp, beefed up driveshaft, upgraded suspension and a 12 bolt rear end to run 600 plus hp

Well the Patriot 496 motor is pretty sweet but it's over $7000,a big step up in price over that first 454 which looks to be a pretty nice street engine at a reasonable price.
The Dominator 460hp engine looks to be the bargain of the bunch having the Patriot aluminum heads and an Eagle lower end with forged pistons for about the same price as as the first engine which is mostly stock GM garden variety big block stuff IE cast crank/rods,cast oval port heads.
460 ponnies is more than enough to get ya in trouble lol.

+1 to what Y2K said.

I think the Patriot setup is probably the best bang for your buck but the others aren't something to turn your nose up to either. I think with any of those setups you'll be happy and see a huge difference from your current setup.
