Default engine dying...

The 305 in my 79 camaro started dying today after extended driving periods. Today I took the car out for the first time in a coupleweeks because i finally got around to putting in the windshield and completing a few other projects to make it drivable. I drove it for about twenty minutes and everything seemed fine. Then i stopped at a red light for about a minute, and the car suddenly died. It would not start back up, but turned over fine. A friend towed the car back to my house with his truck. About 30 minutes later i tried to start it and it turned over on the first crank. I let it run for about15 minutes and then it died again and would not start back up. It started up again in about a half hour. It seems like something is overheating and stopping the spark of the car. Then when it cools down it is free to start again. Im just starting to learn about cars so im not sure what to do to fix this problem... any advice would be appreciated.

today i replaced the coil and gave it a general tune up. The problem disapeared and the car started running better than ever.
