Default Eating Alternators

Well I am completely stumped. Since I have put in a new crate everything has just been a big hassle. With the new engine I have already gone through 4 alternators. The first two took about 2-3 months to go out but these last two have gone out within a week. I have made sure that all of my grounds are good. The only thing that I can think of is when I was looking at the wires down by the starter the studs that they bolted onto were loose. Could this cause for a bad grounding? I have also but in some Flowtech headers which gets REALLY close to the starter and the wires. I know for sure on more then one occasion the wire have burned a little on the headers. Has anyone encountered this with their's before? When I had my stock 305 I had a similar problem but an alternator would last me about a year or so. The only think that I can think of besides bad grounding is with the new MSD Distributor I put in it. HELP![:@]

My buddy's 91 Rally Sport 305 is doing the same thing; he's went through 4 alternators. Same way first one lasted about a month and so did the next one then the last two he's put on went out in a week or less. His car is totally stock, No msd, no headers none of that. Stumps me.

Does he still have the problem or did he fix it, or did it just fix itself (which would be nice)?

Have you been going around jump starting cars?

It's parked right now. I think he's getting ready to put it up for the winter anyways. It's still not fixed
And I doubt he's jump started any cars.

There are some pretty ****ty rebuilders out there. I mean test and clean and rebox. Go to an upper level brand, IE: Delco Remy, Motorcraft, Bosch, etc. so You'll get the best part. I never use rebuilt parts on My own stuff, only new and never have a problem that way.

Bosch sucks I.M.O. Lifetime warrenty on their parts, but it became a yearly ritual changing out the starter on my buddy's 89 Capri. I got one in my truck and it's being a pain in the ***. We both got the brand new ones too. Alternator on our 02 Mer. Mountaineer works flawlessly though.

loose connections or bad wire (wire thats been overheated or shorted ) can cause over charging and death of an alternator. if i was you i would replace the battery cables and all wire and connections associated with the charging system. there isn't that many and it would sure pay off in the long run if it rectifys the problem. BTW the studs on the starter sometimes have a little play. nothing to be concerned about. it might be a good idea tho on the next alternator look for one with higher amperage to keep the load to a minimum. Sick

Yeah, Norm, You're right. I was just using it as an example. My daughter put a bosch fuel pump in Her Tahoe and it disn't work out of the box, ended up with a New GM one.
