Dumb Question: Trans fluid leaking from speedometer cable attachment
Trans fluid is leaking from where the speedometer cable enters the trans on my '81 Camaro with the turbo350 trans. I took the nut off but there doesn't seems to be a good way to seal that to keep it from leaking. What am I missing? I'm sure it's something simple so I apologize in advance for the dumb question.
I took the nut off but did not take off the small plate/tab. I will do that and get a new o-ring. Any idea what the o-ring is called? Thanks.
If it were mine, I wouldn't waste my time replacing just the o-ring. Leaking fluid around the speedometer gear housing is not an uncommon thing, especially with an old worn cast aluminum housing. Mine leaked badly when sitting for more than a week, and an o-ring didn't help. This steel housing, which was designed to fix the leak issue, did do the trick quite well though: Speedometer Gear Housing
Ditto. If you're going to pull the gear housing, I'd replace it. There's an inner and outer seal, and the new housing comes with both. It will definitely fix whichever is the problem.
