Default Dash problems

ok i decided it was time to work on the car some more the heater didn't work when i got it so it turns out sombody didn't have the vacume hose hooked up that pulls the actuators from def to heat that was easy.
But i did also look into the dash lights and gauges not working it turns out the guy before me or before him cut the main harness head plug that plugs in to the cluster ???? why do people do this stuff i have no clue .
so now i either have to get a whole new harness $500??? or get the head that plugs in and start splicing what a night mare??? help please anybody with suggestions!! I would like to hook up the stock gauges like fuel tach water etc or i can get all after market ones (not!!!).

What year and options does yours have? I have the one for my 78 still, I was gonna save it just in case but for the right price I'd part with it.

Its the same plugs are used for cars with gauges and idiot lights. The difference is the arrangement of the wires. So be careful when you know where your new comes from. There is a thread about a swap from idiots to gauges on nasty but i don't have a link right now. Its just rearranging the pins in the plug.
