I had a friend who pulled his and restored it himself. He removed a little material off the insdie, then used some aircraft type of adhesive to bond it back to the inside, and clamped it overnight until it dried. It came out nice enough that I may do the same to mine.
My '71 is starting to get a little wave to the front edge, and I was going to get one of the repair covers that sell cheap for around $55., but I'll try his way first.

What's the worst thing that could happen? It wont work, and you'll leave it as is, or buy the cap and cover it. I saw the caps installed on TV one Sat. , and they looked pretty easy to do. No removing anything, just degrease and stick them in place with adhesive. They said if the old pad is too warped you just trim away the warped part and then install the cap and it hides the trimming.
Looks like I was wrong on the price of the caps, they're $90. C-14656-5a

my entire dash is destroyed, near the pass side it looks like a cracking volcano coming out of the dashboard with little cracks all over the rest of it, damn neglectful prior owners >=[

Probably not neglectful, just not garaged. If they set outside with the sun beating down on them for 30 yrs. they get pretty well used up.
