74 Camaro stalling might need a sending unit
Hi everyone I am a proud new owner of a 74 camaro type lt with a 350 4 barrel automatic. That was bought from a little old lady thats owned it since 79. Here is where I could really use everyones help. when i drove it home it was running like it was starving for gas if the gas pedal was pushed to much. come off the gas for a few seconds and she could accelerate till it would seem like it was stalling out again. So I pulled over to check the fuel filter in the carb was clean. opened line and no flood of gas came out just a trickle of gas dripped out. hooked line back up. It started right up, and has run fairly good now only feels like it running out of gas while getting on the freeway with pedal to the medal. it does have a full tank of gas but I know the gas gauge dosent work. So I know it has a 21 gallon gas tank and that seems easy enough to find. But the sending unit dosent work, telling me my gas only has about half a tank of gas, So I feel I have a 30 year old dirty gas tank and a faulty sending unit.
Can I use a Sending unit from a 75 to 77? I havent dropped the tank yet to verify how many lines I need. I think it should be at least a 2 or a 3 line sending unit. I plan to drop the tank this weekend with some advice. thank you in advance.

If your pretty sure it is starving for fuel you should put a fuel pressure gage on it. If the pump is good any you still have low pressure there is a sock on the end of the fuel sending unit that could be plugs...
It sounds to me like you metering rods in the carbare not working right. Most likly in need of a carbrebuild. It could also so be that you are not getting all the spark advance, either the weights are not free or the vacuum advance is not work right.

If you replace the non-working sending unit, you should be able to find one NAPA, or any major parts store for 50-75 bucks or so, for a '74. Be SURE to ask if itcomes withthe rubber "O" ring.When you drop the tank, pull off the sending unit, its almost a guarantee the O ring will be cracked somewhere, or you could nick it when removing the sender, and using the old one very likely will cause gas leaks around the unit. Dropping a tank isnt much fun, and this WILL **** you off........
should there be one after the fuel pump besides the one on the carb. I just have a straight line from the pump to the carb. I checked with the local auto part stores and they tell me for that year its a dealer only item for a 74 sending unit. does anyone know if i can use a different year?
Ecklers camaro shows this one, but no pic. apparently, 74-75 is different than years prior and after. Id call them. Its a good price, though.

thanks for the info I spoke to a guy at classic industries and was saying I might be able to clean up the one I have and wanted me to ck my floats so I will be dropping the tank tomorrow and checking my floats replacing the sock and doing a voltage ck on the sending unit I will let you all know what I find after the weekend. thank for all your help so far.
good news I found that the connecter going to the sending unit was all corroded and giving me a false reading, wide open. disasembled the unit and cleaned up the connector on top of the sending unit and inside got rid of the corrosion and now the gauge reads 0-100 ohms. problem now is my gauge reads empty to 1/4 tank I think the remainder of the problem is in the gauge. If anyone is thinking they have a bad sending unit they may want to only clean up the electrical connection on the sending unit. Sorry I forgot to take pics to show how corroded the connecter was on the inside, I think that was the real main problem. Atleast now I have an idea if my tank is empty or atleast I have some gas in it. I was reading 7 volts on the line should I be reading more with a full tank of gas. if anyone could answer that it might help in the future if I need to replace the gauges.
