Default 1979 camaro fuel sending unit help.

hey when i got my camaro its fuel gauge was saying its way past full like horizontal.
i bought a brand new fuel gauge at a swap meet and i want to install that while i look around for a new gauge cluster. im just probing around and can get the gauge to go to empty with both the new one and the one in the cluster by grounding the one out and having the other one hooked up. but i think it has to do with my sending unit. im going to run the gas out of it and drop the tank and see if thats the problem. can someone tell me if im doing this right and were the location of this sensor wire from the sending unit is or should i just chase it down. i want too keep the original gauge cluster if possible. but im kinda stumped.
thanks

Since both gauges move the same way, the problem would be with either the sending unit or wiring. Check the wiring first, because if the wire that goes from the sending unit to the gauge is grounded out anywhere (split or pinched and touching the body), it will peg the gas gauge to full.

ok i will try and track the wiring from the tank to gauge down and locate any damage. im going to drop the tank anyways for this and if that doesn't work i will just clean up the sending unit and see if that solves the problem.
