Oil pan to crossmember clearance. Thats the con. I'm sure the conversion mounts were designed around sb mounts.

Doesn't make sense. The small block mounts are shorter than the big block. The big block are the taller motor mounts.

The bb needed a shorter mount for hood clearance. The mount I am talking about is the one that bolts to the sub frame.

Take a look over on ls1tech.com. IIRC most of the threads I have seen over there on the subject the guys are using either BB mounts or plates.

That's sort of correct, but not completely correct. The BBC Camaros used shorter frame mounts, but taller motor mounts. SBC's used taller frame mounts, but shorter motor mounts. The complete assemblies are almost identical in height.
The BBC is slightly taller, and for hood clearance they ran a very unique lower than normal intake to get the needed hood clearance. I've gone round and round with parts guys over this for 38 yrs. that I've owned my BBC Camaro. Constantly getting the wrong motor mounts unless I take mine in and match them up to what they have on the shelf.

I used the SB mounts to install my LS1. Engine fit like a glove.

You can see them on my LS1 install thread.
