If you plan on doing anything with big block Chevys you absolutely need to find a copy of "How to Hotrod Big-Block Chevys" by Bill Fisher and Bob Waar! There's more great information in there than anywhere on the internet, and it's info that is proven to be spot on.
They cover all the best things to do to a big block, and what to avoid. I keep a copy handy every time I do anything with a big block, and they've never steered me wrong yet.
Take a 396 and stroke it to 4" and you've got a 421, or stroke a 402 to 4" and you've got a 427 with way more torque than the typical GM 427! That's basically just a 454 crank in either engine and you'll have a stump puller!
