Convert 78 camaro to modern fuel injection
I have a 78 Camaro with a 350 engine and holly carb. When it was running , I got 14 MPG.
Need new engine. Can I increase my MPG substantially (while not losing any horsepower) by replacing old engine with a newer 350 engine with fuel injection (maybe from a wrecked vehicle ) and removing all the pollution stuff?
If so, how much increase in gas mileage can I expect?
Thanks,
Kev

You can swap your top end and save alot of money by going to a Tuned Port fuel injection system. Even a stock one from a Third Gen Fbody will do wonders
Alternatively, the best bang for the buck would be and LS series engine. 5.3, 5.7, 6.0 are all excellent choices and affordable options

Fuel injection by itself will not give you great fuel mileage. Engine design, gearing and aerodynamic of the car all make up MPG. A 84 Olds 98 can get 23 MPG on the highway and that is a 4000 Lb box with a carb on it.
An over drive transmission like a 700 R4 will help your highway mileage more then fuel injection will. Manual 5 speed would help even more.
What fuel injection allows the engine to NOT be strictly designed for mileage. The tuneabilty of the computer system allows for an engine that is designed to run 5800 RPMs to also run well at 1500 RPMs.
So what I am saying I could build a car with a Carb that could hit 25 MPG and I can build a fuel injected car that could only get 16 miles per gallon.
If you pulled the complete drive line from a 88-92 350 TPI car you should get about the same mileage 15 City and 25 Highway
