I have two questions.

1- Is it okay to hammer a smaller dia socket onto the head? There isn't too much room to hit it too hard, but needed to get a grip on the rounded head.

2- Is it okay to use some heat on the bolt? I suspect this will heat up the flywheel some...just want to make sure this doesn't cause any damage.


I'm thinking the two of these in conjunction will be effective in getting the bolt out. What do you think?

Why not just get a good sized pair of vise grips on it and break it loose? After it's loose then most anything will turn the bolt, even if it's rounded. If the vise grips wont do it, then tacking another nut on the head with a MIG welder will heat it, and suffice to make a good grip surface too.

 

How close to the next smaller size is it, and have you tried a metric socket? Sometimes metrics can fit in between sizes.
Did you round off the head trying to remove the bolt, or was it "already like that"?

 

My son was helping me while I was away and used a 12 pt rather than a 6 pt socket to attempt to remove the bolts. Honest mistake on his part. He's blessed for trying. FYI, I have since managed to get it removed by heating the head up a bit then forcing a 9/16" socket onto the rounded head. I used a 3lb mallet to hit the socket to get it on, however I could only swing it about 6" or so due to the lack of space...probably a good thing. However, I'm always concerned about hurting the flexplate or converter. I guess I'll find out soon.
