Default hurst shifter and no reverse

so here's my problem. my dad has a 76 corvette stingray with an aftermarket hurst shifter and a Muncie M-21 4 speed and neither me or him can get it to shift into reverse. I've also noticed that when we're at car shows and someone else has a 4 speed stingray that when their car is in 1st their shifter is more towards the middle of the console where when dad's shifter is in 1st its rubbing against the console. I've removed the console to see if I could get it in reverse and still no luck. we also have no idea which hurst shifter it has. is there anyway I can see what it is without removing it?

The shifter in my Camaro is out of an early Corvette. It has a reverse lock out feature built in.

I found this place with a quick search, but I bought my rebuild kit from somewhere else. The swap/upgrade can all be done from inside the car.

I have a 69 Vette with a Muncie, and it goes into reverse without a fight. Your 76 however, came with a Borg Warner T-10 trans, so if that shifter was swapped from the T-10 to the Muncie, the problem is you have the wrong shifter. You may be able to put the shifter in neutral, and give it a good slap over into the reverse gate, but it's not right. Is your shifter the reverse lockout t-handle type (like factory) as shown above? If not, your reverse gate is spring loaded. Corvette Transmission ID Codes

well according to Hurst they only made 1 shifter for the 68-79 vettes and thats the competition plus so I would assume it would be good for any 4 speed the vette came with. which is now what I'm assuming this stingray has and I know its the M-21 because my mom rebuilt it while dad was rebuilding the L-48. so if its spring loaded would that mean I have to push down on the shifter to get it to go into reverse?

Spring loaded to the side. It's not the shifter that counts as much as the right installation kit. Is yours the right one, or was it "made" to fit? Competition Plus Installation Kits

I don't know if it is the right installation kit. is there a way I can tell by looking at the linkage?
